SCOSTEP guideline for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in proposals and newsletter articles

Download these guidelines as a pdf here.
1. Any use of AI in the preparation of proposals/articles must be disclosed at the bottom of the proposals/articles or in the submission process.
2. Writers are accountable for integrity and originality of proposals/articles, including for any use of AI. The use of AI must not breach plagiarism policy: proposals/articles must be the author’s own and may not present other people’s ideas, data, words or other material without proper citation and transparent referencing.
3. The use of AI in the text writing process is accepted, but only to improve the language and readability of the proposals/articles, not to generate text. Human oversight is recommended.
4. The use of AI should be avoided to create or alter images including enhancing, obscuring, moving, removing, or introducing a specific feature within an image or figure. Adjustments to brightness, contrast or color balance are acceptable if and as long as they do not obscure or eliminate any information present in the original image.
5. AI tools may be used to analyze and draw insights from data, as part of the research process.
